ALIA administers professional liability and misappropriation claims and manages the mandatory indemnity program for Alberta lawyers. This includes the examination and review of claims, hiring of external lawyers to litigate claims and settlement of claims when appropriate.
All Alberta lawyers in private practice (“Subscribers“) must purchase mandatory indemnity coverage through ALIA. ALIA recommends that all Subscribers (or their law firms) consider purchasing additional insurance (e.g. excess insurance an employee theft insurance) to address those risks. Excess insurance coverage is voluntary and is available through commercial brokers and the Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association.

ALIAlert communications highlight specific, timely issues around fraud and loss prevention, while ALIAdvisory communications feature general news and information with a focus on topics of interest to Subscribers.
History of ALIA
For over 30 years, ALIA has supported and defended the finances and reputation of Alberta lawyers who participate in the mandatory indemnity program. Throughout that period, ALIA has also compensated members of the public who have suffered certain financial losses due to the negligence of an indemnified Alberta lawyer.
